Jeb Bows Out, Thune Prepping While Santorum Heads to Iowa

Dubbed the “the candidate hiding in plain sight” and deemed by many especially among mainline conservatives and neo-conservatives as perhaps the best hope for the GOP to win back the White House, former two term Florida Governor Jeb Bush today quashed speculation that had been building in recent weeks that he was considering a presidential run in 2012.

The argument for Jeb Bush ran something like this: each of the other presumed front runners have obvious perhaps fatal flaws and thus only Jeb Bush can pull together the disparate threads of the GOP. moreover, he has strong conservative credentials, is the only Republican ever to win two terms of the Sunshine state, has a political pedigree second to none even if tarnished by his older brother, can appeal to the all-important Hispanic population with his Mexican-born wife in tow, is perceived as less divisive on social issues who would thus appeal to independents, would do well in his home state that electoral vote rich battleground state that has often decided presidential elections and unlike older brother can speak in complete sentences.

Despite the growing speculation that he was at least considering a run in 2012, today when asked Louisville’s ABC affiliate WHAS following an event for Rand Paul if he was eying the White House, Jeb Bush was adamant. “I am not running for president,” he said.

While Bush is dampening speculation, South Dakota Senator John Thune is fueling it. Seen as a mainstream conservative alternative to Romney and Pawlenty and beloved just for being the slayer of former Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, Thune couples a sparse Senatorial record with universal admiration in conservative circles. He’s the guy no one hates while Romney, Palin, Huckabee, Gingrich et al each have their conservative detractors.

Today both Politico and Fox News report that Senator Thune is prepping for a 2012 run by laying out sweeping proposals to remake the Congressional budget process.

Thune’s budget plan would create a joint House-Senate panel on cutting government spending, call for a line-item veto and mandate that 10 percent of the deficit be cut each year until it is eliminated.

as he tries to build up his policy credentials, Thune is also stepping up his political travel, headlining a Republican Party of Virginia event on Wednesday, to be followed by trips to Arkansas, California and Ohio on behalf of GOP Senate candidates. With Thune in heavy demand on the campaign circuit, more such trips are expected soon.

Thune’s political travel and his efforts to make a name for himself on budgetary matters has his Senate colleagues, both publicly and privately, offering encouragement if Thune decides to enter the 2012 presidential race. Never mind that his budget ideas will never see the light of day in a Democratic Senate — they help raise Thune’s policy profile within the Republican Party.

“I think he’d make a great candidate,” said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. “The party would be well served by having someone like him.”

Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said Thune “has all the qualities [for president].”

“John’s future is in his own hands,” Cornyn added. “It depends on what he wants to do.”

Meanwhile, CNN reports that former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum has held private meetings with former members of his staff to discuss a presidential run. John Brabender, an adviser to the former Senator, confirmed to CNN that Santorum is “actively considering [a presidential bid] by traveling to early primary states and talking with conservative leaders.” in that light, the Iowa Independent reported on Monday that Santorum, who hails from social conservative wing of the GOP, would headline a fundraiser for GOP Attorney General candidate Brenna Findley in Sioux Center on August 17th. The visit will be Santorum’s fifth to the state in the past year.

This is totally me.

“Uh … you’re much better looking than Arnold Schwarzenegger was in that movie.”

“F%&k yeah, I am!” I said, smiling, and horrifying the woman next to us who was in the shop with her toddler.

“It’s clear you guys like each other. Don’t overthink it. this is the beginning. Just go with it.”

He always knew the perfect thing to say.

As I was walking home, I literally, completely without irony, found myself whistling. I was thinking about the Australian, and his body, and how good it felt to wake up next to him, iron grip and solar heat aside. so wrapped up was I in my reverie that it took me a minute to realize my phone was buzzing in my pocket. I looked at the screen, and at that moment fate whisked by to take a massive crap on my good vibes.

I looked up, and saw dark clouds sweeping in to block the sunlight.

Thunder boomed, bouncing off the cement.

Seismic tremors shifted the ground beneath my feet, cracking open the pavement as terrified pedestrians ran for cover.

I’m pretty sure I even saw that Cloverfield monster roaming the streets.

I brought the phone to my ear.

“What the hell do you want?” I hissed.

“We need to talk,” Gimli replied.

Knowing The Vampire Diaries, it’s pretty likelyKatherine isn’t looking to start a recipe swap club with her descendant. WhileKatherine’s arrival is pretty exciting, I’m not sure it can compete withan appearance by Taylor Kinney.

I originally gave TheVampire Diaries a pass after watching the pilot, but seeing AfterEltonreaders give it so much praise convinced me to give it a second chance. while Ithought the latter part of the first season suffered from a Bonnie deficiency, it certainly makesfiguring out what to watch on Thursday nights much tougher.

Thursday also brings a new Project Runway, where thedesigners have to design resortwear in a team challenge. I’m finding myselfdrawn into the current “Mike Cversus the mean girls and gays” story arc to a ridiculous degree.unfortunately, that means I’m starting to really dislike everyone as they seemto spend all their free time complaining about Mike. Did Mike C steal Gretchen’s pea puree?

Finally, Thursday also brings a new stop Onthe Road with Austin & Santino as well as the top twenty of The100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

Stickydrama Speaks – Urlesque's Interview With the Gawker of …

In the wake of Slaughtergate, a scandal in which an 11-year old girl achieved minor internet celebrity and subsequently came under attack by anonymous internet trolls, I became aware of a world that both fascinates and unsettles me.

I’ve always had a peripheral knowledge of the world of “scene kids,” a fashion and music-oriented teen subculture that has evolved out of the goth and emo scenes to produce something like this. these teens, and those not specifically associated with scene culture, populate a website called Stickam, which allows its users to broadcast live streaming video.

Stickam launched in 2006 and has been the source of much handwringing from child welfare advocates ever since. This new York Times piece explains that the site has come under fire for not doing enough to fight adult content on their network, especially considering that many of its users are underage:

Users must be 14 to sign up, but kids lie. I’m guessing a lot of the site’s members were born on January 1, 1901, if you know what I mean. Compounding all this is that the parent company that owns Stickam also owns several companies that produce live webcam porn. but even without the porn connection, users are figuring out ways to sex up the site on their own. Just last year, there were three sex crime arrests among Stickam users.
StickyDrama is a blog dedicated to documenting the news and gossip surrounding the world of Stickam and other social networks like MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, and increasingly, Tumblr. I chatted with the man behind StickyDrama, Christopher Stone, about why Stickam appeals to teens, safety concerns arising from underage users broadcasting live video, and “lol-cows.”

The following videos are from YouTube, but they’re by Stickam users and represent the sort of content you can expect to find at Stickam.

Can you tell us a bit about StickyDrama and how it works?

My site StickyDrama is a WordPress-powered tabloid chronicling controversies and scandals on social networking sites like Stickam but nowadays more Twitter and Facebook and, more recently, Tumblr. Whereas I only publish information I believe is accurate, most of my posts are satirical. Prior to this Jessi Slaughter affair, the mainstream media was mostly interested in my site’s reportage of various crime that took place on social networking sites, particularly sex crimes. for these reasons my site has gained a reputation as a mixture of TMZ crossed with To Catch a Predator.

Tell us about the rankings. What drives popularity on Stickam? (Sex appeal? drama? sense of humor?)

Drama and SCENE appeal (not sex appeal) unless the entertainer has enjoyed significant mainstream exposure. Stickam’s #1 entertainer is technology talk-show host Leo Laporte, nothing dramatic or “scene” about him. but most of Stickam’s top entertainers are “scene kids,” the best term for kids who wear makeup and extensions and obsess over social networking sites.

What is it about Stickam that fascinates you enough to maintain the blog every day?

Lol well, sometimes even adults who dine on filet mignon and Bordeaux are in the mood for pizza and Dr Pepper. I’m fluent in French and often stroll through the many museums and cultural landmarks here in Los Angeles, but I also love watching Stickam’s most highly ranked female entertainer, 17-year-old Kiki Kannibal, get into loud nasty on-camera catfights with her nutjob mother.

What do you think the popularity of Stickam says about the evolution of visual entertainment? Do you think it will ever approach the popularity of YouTube?

Stickam was the first true example, in my opinion, of the marriage of the internet and television. They have “programming” and “program schedules,” and their service has almost eliminated any difference in meaning between the terms “broadcast” and “webcast.” I worked for a few years as an editor and then producer at a broadcast cable Video on Demand network in new York City, so I have solid experience in a broadcast environment. Stickam has always struck me as public access television for literally everyone—just turn on your computer and you can have a live audience of hundreds and even thousands, if you’re popular enough.

But YouTube will probably remain the dominant streaming video service for a while, because you have far more people contributing content there than on any live (or dynamic) live streaming site. popular YouTubers are very concerned about their image (in part owing to sites like mine) and carefully edit their videos before uploading.

What’s a lol-cow?

A lol-cow is slang for an internet meme or forced meme. (We call them lol-cows because they give us lols as cows give us milk.) Jessi has been unwillingly transmogrified into a lol-cow or meme, quite possibly the youngest one ever.

What do you think drives a lot of the drama on Stickam?

A combination of what drives drama on TV and in tabloids: conflict and scandal. Viewers love to watch online fights and also love to learn embarrassing information about online entertainers. Think Jerry Springer and National Enquirer.

If you had a tween, would you want them to be engaged with the Stickam community?

No. In my opinion Stickam should be 18+ only. its age limit of 14 is far too young and a shameless grab at advertising revenue without much regard for the safety of its users.

Should cyberbullying be a concern for parents, or is it blown out of proportion?

Yes it should be a concern for anyone who thinks their child might every use the internet. Just like in real life, eventually online you are going to bump into someone unpleasant. Unlike in real life, on the internet unpleasant people can team up and relentlessly harass a target, as we’ve recently seen with Jessi Slaughter.

How much of the drama on Stickam is driven by trolls from 4chan and elsewhere? or does most of it happen from within the Stickam community?

Stickam isn’t as dramatic as it once was. its “Golden Age” peaked at 2007 or 2008. many of its most popular users went to Twitter or Facebook, or to jail. but yes, trolls from 4chan and AnonIB definitely still frequent Stickam often, on the lookout for “win,” which is nude imagery of users.

Is there a point for you when things go beyond drama to a dangerous place, where you have felt compelled to take down posts or ban users? where do you draw the line?

On StickyDrama, I don’t ever allow the publication of threats to physically harm or kill someone, or to damage property. I rarely, although a few times have, published someone’s home address. Neutrally posting someone’s home address isn’t very nice, but as long as you don’t encourage harm or property damage it’s not unlawful either. there are some situations in which I feel posting an address is justified, like when the address is associated with a crime and alerting others to the danger is a public service.

But what 4Chan did, posting 11-year-old Jessi Slaughter’s address just because she said a few curse words, took lulz too far.

McCoy Impressive:

After a rocky start, Browns rookie quarterback Colt McCoy ended up playing his best game of the preseason.

McCoy fumbled his first snap and also looked terrible the series after that. From that point on, though, he was perfect.

McCoy completed all 13 of his passes for 131 yards.

“Turning the ball over on the first play of the game is frustrating,” McCoy said. “I thought after that we moved the ball pretty efficiently.”

Many believed that McCoy could be cut earlier in the preseason although the Browns have said that McCoy should be on the final roster when it is announced Saturday.

McCoy’s competition for the third quarterback spot, Brett Ratliff, took over in early in the third quarter and did not play well. Ratliff finished the evening 10-for-15 for 93 yards including an interception, but did engineer the game-winning drive on a short field.

Hardesty Update:

Browns Running Back Montario Hardesty

Unfortunately for rookie running back Montario Hardesty, he cannot seem to get healthy. Hardesty made his debut Thursday night and was playing great until a knee injury forced him out of the game.

“It felt good being out on the field again,” Hardesty said. “My knee feels fine but I will know more tomorrow.”

Hardesty was able to walk off the field and into the locker room under his own power. Head coach Eric Mangini said Hardesty’s injury was to his left knee, the opposite of the knee he injured in training camp.

As Hardesty was leaving the locker room after the game, he was on crutches.

Sack Party:

Browns Linebacker Kaluka Maiava

The Browns had their best outing pressuring the quarterback Thursday against the Bears. the team recorded three total sacks including one by last year’s fourth-round pick Kaluka Maiava.

“The pass rush will come,” Mangini said. “I’m more concerned about the scheme instead of individuals”

The Browns sack total from the final preseason game was two more then the team had all of the preseason.

Gladiators in the House:

Cleveland Gladiators head coach Steve Thonn was in attendance for Thursday night’s game. many players who get cut from NFL rosters wind up in either the Arena League or Canadian Football League.

“I’ve got my eye on a few guys,” Thonn said. “They have a lot of talent here so maybe one will fall to us.”

Thonn mentioned he was looking for defensive backs but would not say which ones he hoped might end up with the Gladiators.
